Yes. Jaén is one of the last cities in Spain where a free tapa comes with every drink you order. Not a bowl of olives or a few crisps. Proper dishes like croquettes, sausages, toasted sandwiches, and small plates of stew, included with every beer, wine, coffee, or water.
Possibly my favourite thing about the whole province. I went a whole day without ordering food. With every coffee, water, beer, and wine I got a free tapa, and by evening I was genuinely full.

How Does Free Tapas in Jaén Work?
You order a drink. Any drink. The bar brings you a tapa with it, usually chosen by the kitchen. You don’t order it, you don’t choose it, and you don’t pay for it.
Some bars let you pick from a short list. Others bring whatever they’re making that day. Either way, the tapa is included in the price of the drink.
A beer costs around 1.50 to 2 euros. A coffee is 1.20 to 1.50. At those prices, a tapas crawl through four or five bars costs less than a single restaurant meal. It allowed me to splurge occasionally on more expensive meals during the trip.
Where to Go for Tapas in Jaén
The best area for a tapas crawl is around Plaza de la Constitución and the streets nearby. The bars are clustered close together, and each one has its own take on what comes with your drink.

What I love is that there are so many local restaurants, and every one has its own take on Spanish cuisine. This is the perfect city for tapas crawling.
The standout for me was Malavida. I ate there twice and barely spent anything, with free tapas coming with every drink. Everyone sits outside, so the inside is usually empty.
Do You Have to Pay for Tapas in Spain?
It depends on the city. In Jaén and Granada, free tapas with drinks is standard. In Málaga, Seville, and Barcelona, it’s rare and you’ll typically need to order and pay for tapas separately.
Jaén is arguably the best city in Andalusia for free tapas because the portions are larger and the prices are lower than Granada.
One Caveat
The free tapa comes with standard drinks. Jethro ordered rum and cokes all evening and didn’t get a single one. How do you get a free croquette with a 1.50 euro water but not a 10 euro rum and coke? Anyway. Order a beer or wine and you’ll be fine.
The tapas alone make Jaén worth visiting, and the food is only part of the story.
