Malaga in February: Weather, Things to Do & Is It Worth Visiting?

Mild days, almond trees in bloom, and Carnival make February the perfect off-season month.

If you're thinking about February for your Malaga trip, you're onto something good.

The days are noticeably longer than January, the almond trees burst into blossom across the hills, and there's a real sense of spring approaching.

It's still winter by Spanish standards, but by mid-February, I am already wearing open shoes and ditching the jacket during the day!

Plus, if you time it right, you might catch Carnival, one of Andalusia's most famous festivals.

For a review of every month, take a look at my best time to visit Malaga guide.

What to Expect from the Weather in February

Daytime temperatures typically reach 16-18°C (61-64°F), which feels genuinely pleasant in the sunshine.

You can sit on a terrace for lunch, walk the city without heavy layers, and enjoy being outdoors. February is noticeably milder than January, the days are getting longer, the sun feels a little stronger, and you start to sense spring approaching.

Evenings are cool to around 7-9°C (45-48°F), so you'll still want a proper jacket after sunset.

The sea temperature sits at 15°C (59°F), still only for the brave! But the beaches are lovely for walking, and the winter light can be beautiful.

The UV index in February is 3-4, so sunglasses are useful on bright days, and a light SPF doesn't hurt if you're spending extended time outside.

Okay, and that's the weather. Now, for reasons, February is a brilliant time to visit!

You can skip ahead to my calendar where I try to keep track of everything free happening in Malaga if you prefer!

No matter the month, there are always a few staples that are always worth catching if you're in the city.

Most museums are free on Sundays, as are the Gibralfaro Castle and the Alcazaba. P.S. The Roman Theatre is ALWAYS free.

La Merced market is on the first Sunday of each month, and the Botanical Gardens are free on Sundays too.

But the real draw in February is Carnival! Usually mid-to-late February (dates vary with Easter), Carnival brings colour, music, and celebration to the streets. Costume parades, street performances, chirigotas (satirical singing groups), and the famous "burial of the sardine" finale.

And don't miss the almond blossoms! The hills behind the coast turn white and pink with blossoms in February, and are particularly beautiful in the Axarquia region east of Malaga.

February's mild weather and thin crowds make it ideal for exploring.

A day trip into the countryside to see the almond blossoms is worth the effort.

Try villages like Alfarnate and Alfarnatejo, or the road to Antequera. The contrast of white flowers against green hills and blue sky is unforgettable.

The Alcazaba, Picasso Museum, and Cathedral are all quiet, no queues, no crowds.

The weather is perfect for hiking the Caminito del Rey (book ahead!) without summer heat or winter chill.

And Valentine's Day brings a romantic atmosphere if you're travelling as a couple. Rooftop bars make for a special evening!

Try some amazing tapas in Malaga Old Town, and maybe a museum to warm up if needed.

What Time Does the Sun Set in February?

The sun sets between 6:30 pm and 7:15 pm through February, with daylight increasing noticeably as the month progresses.

By late February, you have about 11 hours of daylight.

This is a big improvement on January; the longer evenings make a real difference to how much you can fit into a day, and the extra light lifts the mood.
