29th Málaga Film Festival 2026: Spanish Cinema's Red Carpet Moment

The Málaga Film Festival is Spain's premier celebration of Spanish-language cinema.

For ten days each March, the city trades beach towels for red carpets as industry stars, directors, and film buffs gather at the historic Teatro Cervantes.

This is Spain's answer to Sundance, but with Mediterranean sunshine and jasmine-scented streets.

Málaga Film Festival 2026

Where to Stay During the Festival

The festival is concentrated around the Centro Histórico, so staying central makes a big difference. Book early, March in Málaga is already popular and the festival pushes prices up.

AC Hotel Málaga Palacio is the unofficial festival hotel where most of the industry stays. It's steps from Teatro Cervantes and the rooftop bar is a regular after-screening spot. Palacio Solecio, a restored 18th-century palace in the Jewish Quarter, is just as close to the venues and one of the most elegant stays in the city. Only YOU Hotel Málaga is at the start of Calle Larios with a rooftop pool overlooking the harbour, and Vincci Larios Diez sits right on Calle Larios itself, with balconies overlooking the midday interviews below.

Soho is a great alternative if you want something quieter. H10 Croma Málaga is in the heart of the artsy Soho district, a 5-minute walk from the red carpet but with a more relaxed, indie feel.

La Malagueta puts you near the beach and port. Gran Hotel Miramar is the old-world glamour choice, a 15-minute walk from the theatres but perfect if you want a beachside escape each evening.

The festival spans ten days, bookended by glamorous galas and filled with premieres across the city's historic theaters.

Pre-Festival: MaF (Málaga de Festival)

Before the red carpet is rolled out, the MaF transforms Málaga into a giant art gallery. Expect over 125 activities including open-air concerts, film-inspired street art, and small-scale screenings in hidden plazas.

  • Dates: February 12 – March 5
  • Locations: 50+ venues citywide
  • Highlights: Film-themed cultural events across the city

Opening Weekend & Premiere Week

Key Venues & Locations

Málaga Film Festival 2026 venues

Teatro Cervantes

The "Main Stage." This is where the heavy hitters premiere. If you want the full "festival experience" with the director and cast present for a Q&A, this is where you need to be.

Cine Albéniz

Located right next to the Roman Theatre in the old town, this is the heart for true film buffs. It hosts the América, América section (new for 2026) and the International Mosaic. It's also where you'll find the best documentaries.

Teatro Echegaray

Small, intimate, and beautiful. It serves as the home for Zonazine, the festival's most experimental and daring section. Perfect for those who prefer indie gems over blockbusters.

What to Wear: Festival Style

  • Daytime Screenings: Casual. You'll be sitting in old theaters; comfort is key
  • Evening Premieres: "Smart-casual" is the local standard
  • The Red Carpet: If you have a ticket to a 9:00pm premiere at the Cervantes, people do dress up. Think cocktail attire rather than black tie

Practical Tips for Film Fans

  • VOSE is King: Most international and some Spanish films are shown in VOSE (Original Version with Spanish Subtitles). Check the program icons carefully!
  • The Biznaga: The trophies are shaped like a Biznaga (Málaga's signature jasmine "flower"). Look for the giant Biznaga statues around the city for the perfect photo op
  • Stay Central: Everything is walkable from the old town, and you'll want to be close when screenings end at midnight

2026 Highlights

This year's Málaga SUR Award goes to actress Rossy de Palma, one of Pedro Almodóvar's most iconic collaborators. Expect her to draw crowds.

The main prize is the coveted Golden Biznaga (Biznaga de Oro), awarded to the best Spanish and best Ibero-American films.

Where to Spot the Stars

You don't need a ticket to see the actors. Here are the best public spots:

  • Teatro Cervantes (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM), stand at the Calle Ramos Marín barriers. This is the main arrival zone for every premiere
  • Calle Larios (1:00 PM - 3:00 PM), the red carpet stretch where stars do midday TV interviews
  • El Pimpi Terrace (2:30 PM - 4:30 PM), grab a spot overlooking the Roman Theatre. It's a popular lunch spot for cast and crew, and one of the best tapas in Malaga
  • AC Hotel Palacio rooftop bar (10:00 PM - 12:30 AM), the rooftop bar is a regular after-screening spot for industry guests. Grab a drink and enjoy the views

Key Dates

  • March 6: Opening Night (busiest red carpet of the festival)
  • March 8: Expected Rossy de Palma & Blanca Portillo Tribute
  • March 14: Awards Gala (Closing Night)

Handprint Ceremony

Location: Paseo Marítimo Antonio Banderas

Time: Usually 12:00 PM on the day of the actor's tribute

Vibe: Best chance for close-up photos outside of the frantic city center

Where to Eat Between Screenings

Most screenings finish between 10:00 PM and midnight, so late dining is part of the festival rhythm. Luckily, Málaga eats late by default.

For a quick bite between films, the old town's tapas bars are your best bet. El Pimpi is the classic (and a regular celebrity haunt during the festival), but the smaller bars on Calle Granada and around Plaza de la Merced are less crowded and just as good.

If you want something more special, check out our guides to restaurants with a view and rooftop bars for post-screening drinks with city views. For budget-friendly options between afternoon screenings, see our cheap places to eat and drink guide.

Local tip

Book dinner reservations for 9:30 PM or later during festival week. Restaurants near Teatro Cervantes fill up fast after the evening screenings let out.

Visiting Málaga in March

March in Málaga is one of the best months to visit. Expect daytime temperatures around 18-20°C with plenty of sunshine, cool evenings (bring a jacket for outdoor screenings), and far fewer tourists than summer.

Beyond the film festival, there's plenty to explore between screenings. The museums are quiet, the old town is walkable without the summer heat, and you can easily fit in a day trip on a rest day. For a full rundown of what else is happening in the city, Guide to Malaga keeps an up-to-date monthly events calendar.
