Why Stay in Nerja?

Because it's one of the few towns left on the Costa del Sol that still feels like Spain.
No high-rises, no mega-resorts. Just a whitewashed Old Town built around a clifftop promenade, with hidden coves below and the Sierra Almijara mountains behind.
There's also incredible food, beautiful beaches, the famous Nerja Caves just minutes away, and Frigiliana up in the hills.
Most people stay 2-3 nights, which is enough to see the town, visit the caves, and take a day trip into the mountains.

Best Areas to Stay in Nerja

Nerja is compact, so anywhere in the centre is walkable. But the area you choose affects what kind of trip you'll have.
Old Town Centre (Recommended)
The heart of Nerja, radiating out from the Balcón de Europa. This is where the best restaurants, tapas bars, and evening atmosphere are.
You can walk to everything: the Balcón, the small cove beaches below the cliffs (Calahonda, Carabeo, El Salón), the Saturday market, and the bus station.
The trade-off is beach access. The Old Town sits on cliffs, so the closest beaches are small coves reached by steps. Burriana Beach is a 15-minute walk.
Best for couples, solo travellers, and anyone who values atmosphere over being right on the sand.
Burriana Beach Area

This is Nerja's biggest beach with 800 metres of golden sand with chiringuitos, water sports, and restaurants right on the shore.
Staying here puts you on the beach, but 15 minutes uphill from the Old Town. The area has restaurants, but they cater more to tourists than locals.
This is the best beach for families and anyone whose idea of a great time is tanning and swimming all day.
Parador Area (Eastern Cliffs)
The Parador de Nerja sits on the clifftops at the eastern edge of town, with its own gardens, pool, and beach access via a lift. Several other properties cluster nearby.
It's quieter and more scenic than the centre, and closer to the Nerja Caves and Maro. The trade-off is a 20-minute walk to the Old Town restaurants, partly uphill on the return.
Best for nature lovers, those seeking quiet, and guests with cars exploring the coast.
Best Hotels in Nerja
Best Luxury: Parador de Nerja

Parador de Nerja
8.6The Parador occupies a spectacular clifftop position surrounded by subtropical gardens. A lift takes you down to a quiet beach below.
The building is modern (1960s, not converted from something historic), but the setting more than makes up for it. The pool overlooks the cliffs, the gardens are genuinely lovely, and breakfast on the terrace looking out over the sea is the kind of thing that defines a trip.
The main consideration is distance. The Old Town is a 20-minute walk, with a partly uphill return.
Best Overall: Hotel Carabeo

Hotel Carabeo
9.2A converted mansion on the clifftops with just seven rooms, each individually decorated with art, antiques, and books. It feels more like staying in someone's beautiful home than a hotel.
The location is perfect: a quiet street in the Old Town, steps from the Balcón de Europa. Carabeo and Calahonda cove beaches are directly below.
No pool, no gym, no spa. What you get instead is a gorgeous building, a perfect location, and owners who genuinely care about your experience.
Best Location: Hotel Balcón de Europa

Hotel Balcón de Europa
8.4No hotel in Nerja has a better address. It sits directly on the famous promenade, with rooms overlooking the viewpoint and the sea.
The hotel trades on location rather than boutique charm. Rooms are comfortable but conventional. A lift descends directly to Calahonda Beach, which is a big plus.
If you're staying here, pay for the sea-view room. Interior rooms miss the point.
Best for Beach: Hotel Nerja Club & Spa

Hotel Nerja Club & Spa
8.3Steps from Burriana Beach with multiple pools, a spa, and resort-style amenities. This is the family choice.
Rooms are modern and functional rather than characterful. You're here for the beach on your doorstep and the pools for when you don't want sand.
Best Value: Hotel Plaza Cavana

Hotel Plaza Cavana
8.7The best combination of location, quality, and price in Nerja's Old Town. It occupies a corner of Plaza Cavana, one of the town's prettiest squares, with the Balcón a two-minute walk away.
Many rooms have balconies overlooking the square. There's a rooftop terrace with a small pool and sea views. The money you save goes further at Nerja's excellent restaurants.
What to Look For
Sea views are worth the extra €20-40 per night. The Mediterranean backdrop transforms a nice room into a memorable one.
Air conditioning is essential from June through September. All the hotels above have it, but check if booking budget options.
Parking matters if you're driving. The Old Town is pedestrianised, so ask your hotel about arrangements when booking.
Half-board rarely makes sense in Nerja. The restaurant scene is excellent, and you'll want the freedom to explore.
When to Book
July and August fill up fast with Spanish families so book 3-6 months ahead.
Semana Santa is another busy period. May-June and September-October have ideal weather and easier availability, but popular hotels still book early.
Winter offers the best deals, with prices dropping 40-50%.
What to Do While Staying in Nerja
I've written about things to do in Nerja in detail, but the highlights are the Balcón de Europa, the beaches, the Nerja Caves, and a day trip to Frigiliana.
If you're adventurous, kayak to the Maro Waterfall on a calm summer morning.
Nerja vs Staying Elsewhere on the Costa del Sol
A lot of people base themselves in Málaga and day-trip to Nerja. That works, but you miss the best parts: the empty beaches at sunrise, the Balcón at sunset, and the evening atmosphere in the Old Town.
If you want nightlife and city culture, stay in Málaga. If you want authentic coastal Spain with beautiful beaches and great food, Nerja is the better base.
Final Recommendation
My personal choice is Hotel Carabeo for its character, location, and the feeling that you're staying somewhere genuinely special.
For families, Hotel Nerja Club & Spa at Burriana is the practical choice.
For a splurge, the Parador de Nerja has the most dramatic setting of any hotel on the eastern Costa del Sol.
Whatever you choose, staying overnight reveals why Nerja is different from the rest of this coast.
