Malaga in April: Weather, Things to Do & Is It Worth Visiting?

Warm days, long evenings, and possibly Spain's most spectacular cultural event.

If you're thinking about April for your Malaga trip, you've picked a winner. This is spring at its absolute best.

It's warm enough to enjoy outdoor dining, cool enough to explore comfortably, and every day feels like beach day!

Plus, if Easter falls in April, you might catch Semana Santa; genuinely one of the most spectacular cultural events in Spain.

For a review of every month take a look at my best time to visit Malaga guide.

What to Expect from the Weather in April

Daytime temperatures typically reach 20-23°C (68-73°F), which feels warm in the sunshine but comfortable for walking and exploring.

This is t-shirt weather during the day, though you'll want a layer for shade and evenings. The warmth builds through the month, though early April can still feel like late winter on cooler days, while late April often gives a taste of summer.

Evenings cool to around 11-13°C (52-55°F), which means you'll need a light jacket for dinner outdoors. The temperature drop after sunset can surprise visitors, so don't pack only summer clothes!

The sea temperature reaches 16°C (61°F), technically swimmable but still bracing. You'll see a few souls taking dips, but this isn't beach swimming weather for most visitors.

The UV index in April sits at 6-7, which means unprotected skin can burn in 20-30 minutes during midday hours. The April sun feels gentle compared to summer, but it's strong enough to catch you out!

Okay, and that's the weather. Now for reasons April is a fantastic time to visit!

You can skip ahead to my calendar where I try to keep track of everything free happening in Malaga if you prefer!

No matter the month, there are always a few staples that are always worth catching if you're in the city.

Most museums are free on Sundays, as are the Gibralfaro Castle and the Alcazaba. P.S. The Roman Theatre is ALWAYS free.

La Merced market is the first Sunday of each month, and the Botanical Gardens are free on Sundays too.

The big event in April is Semana Santa (Holy Week) if Easter falls this month.

Daily processions through the historic centre, elaborate floats (tronos) carried by hundreds of bearers, haunting saetas (flamenco-style songs) sung from balconies, and an emotional atmosphere throughout the week. It's unforgettable.

The Botanical Garden La Concepcion is at its most beautiful in April, with spring blooms throughout. The parks and plazas of the city are lush and green.

April's warm weather makes it perfect for everything.

Terrace season is in full swing! Outdoor dining returns in earnest. The plazas fill with tables, and the evening paseo becomes a social event again. Try tapas in Malaga Old Town or a sunset cocktail on one of Malaga's rooftop bars.

Day trip weather is ideal. April is perfect for excursions to Ronda, the white villages, or the Caminito del Rey. Warm enough to enjoy but not hot enough to exhaust you.

The beaches are increasingly pleasant for sunbathing on warmer days, and the chiringuitos (beach bars) start opening for the season.

You'll find all of the best beaches here, but if you're brave, venture a little further out and try Crows Rock.

The sun sets between 8:30pm and 9:00pm through April, with clocks having already moved forward for summer time.

This means long, pleasant evenings perfect for the Spanish lifestyle of late dinners and evening paseos.

Is April a Good Time to Visit Malaga?

April is the perfect month to do everything in Malaga, and one of the best times to visit!

The weather is warm and increasingly reliable, you can explore all day without overheating, dine outdoors in the evening, and if you time it right, experience the unforgettable spectacle of Semana Santa.

The only reason to skip April is if you want guaranteed hot weather and comfortable sea swimming. But for everything else, April delivers beautifully.
