Both the Alcazaba and Castillo de Gibralfaro offer free entry every Sunday from 14:00. Regular admission is €3.50 for the Alcazaba and €2.20 for Gibralfaro.
The Alcazaba is an 11th-century Moorish fortress with terraced gardens and palatial courtyards. Gibralfaro sits higher up the hill with panoramic views over the port and Mediterranean.
What to expect
Allow about 45 minutes for the Alcazaba and another 30-45 minutes for Gibralfaro. You can visit both in a single afternoon.
Sunday afternoons are busier than weekday mornings, but the atmosphere is relaxed. Wear comfortable shoes for the uphill sections.
Getting there
The Alcazaba entrance is on Calle Alcazabilla, next to the Roman Theatre. A lift now provides easier access for those with limited mobility.
Gibralfaro is a steep 20-minute walk uphill from the Alcazaba, or take bus 35 from Paseo del Parque.
