Every Thursday morning, one of Spain's prettiest villages fills with market stalls.
Frigiliana hosts a weekly market every Thursday morning from 8 am to 2 pm.
Around 50 stalls are set up in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas, right at the entrance to the village.
You'll find fresh produce, local cheeses, hand-painted ceramics, leather goods, and the kind of artisan crafts that make for perfect souvenirs.
It's not a huge market, but that's part of the appeal.
You can browse everything in an hour or so, then spend the rest of the morning wandering the whitewashed streets with a coffee in hand.

When is Frigiliana Market?
Every Thursday, 8 am to 2 pm.
The best time to arrive is before 10 am. By mid-morning, the market gets busy with day-trippers from the coast, parking becomes difficult, and the best produce starts to sell out.
If you arrive early, you'll have the stalls to yourself and can take your time chatting with the vendors. Many of them are from the surrounding Axarquia villages and have been coming here for years.
Where is the Market?
The market is held in Plaza de las Tres Culturas at the village entrance.
If you're driving, this is directly above the main car park.
If you're taking the bus from Nerja, the bus stops right next to the market. You can't miss it.
The location is convenient because you don't need to climb into the old town to reach it. Browse the market first, then head uphill into the village afterwards.

What Can You Buy?
Fresh fruits and vegetables are the backbone of the market. Seasonal produce, local cheeses, cured olives, fresh herbs bundled with twine, and bread still warm from the bakery.
The local speciality is miel de caña, a dark, rich molasses made from sugar cane. Frigiliana has the only remaining sugar cane factory in Europe, and the miel de caña makes an excellent souvenir. It's delicious drizzled over cheese or desserts.
You'll also find Moscatel wine from the Axarquia vineyards, mountain honey from the Sierra Almijara, and locally pressed olive oil.
For crafts, look for hand-painted ceramics (some double as tomato graters), leather bags and belts, handmade jewellery, and embroidered textiles. Nothing mass-produced; it's all made locally or in the surrounding region.
Most vendors prefer cash, so bring some small notes before you start shopping.
Where to Park

Thursday is the busiest parking day in Frigiliana, so plan ahead.
The municipal car park at the village entrance is your best option. The market is held directly above it, so access is easy. It fills up by mid-morning on market days, so arriving before 10 am solves both the parking problem and the crowds.
There's also free parking at the Cofradia car park, which usually has space even when the paid car park is full. It's a 3-minute walk to the market.
If parking sounds like too much hassle, take the bus from Nerja. It stops right at the market, costs around €1.50 each way, and takes 15 minutes. On market days, this is often the easiest option.
What Else to Do on Market Day

After browsing the market, head into the old town for a proper wander.
The cafe beside the playground under El Ingenio is a convenient spot for a second breakfast. They serve pitufos and molletes with olive oil and tomato, along with good coffee and views of the village.
Then climb into the Barribarto, the historic old quarter. The whitewashed streets, flower-filled balconies, and mountain views are the reason Frigiliana is regularly voted one of Spain's prettiest villages.
Allow 2-3 hours for the market and village combined. If you're combining it with Nerja, you can easily spend a full day in the area.
The Sunday Craft Market
If you can't make it on a Thursday, Frigiliana also hosts a smaller craft market on the second Sunday of each month.
This one focuses on handmade goods, jewellery, and artisan crafts rather than fresh produce. It's more intimate than the Thursday market and worth visiting if you're in the area.
Getting to Frigiliana
Frigiliana is 6km from Nerja, about 15 minutes by car or bus. The bus runs about 9 times on weekdays and 7 times on weekends, and stops right at the market.
From Malaga, it's about an hour's drive via the A-7 coastal road. See my Malaga to Frigiliana day trip guide for full details.
Final Thoughts

Frigiliana is worth visiting any day of the week, but the Thursday market adds something extra.
Arrive early, bring cash, and leave time to explore the village afterwards. The combination of market browsing and wandering those famous whitewashed streets makes for a perfect morning.
Just don't forget the miel de caña. It really is delicious.
